This bust, made of marble stone resin and hand-finished with a bronze patina, depicts Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury.
While Queen Elizabeth inherited a nation in poverty, she was quick to dedicate her energies to alleviating the debt and aligning England for safety with Spain, and then seeking to settle the internal struggles and strife that crippled her kingdom. To honor the queen, Bishop Matthew Parker was chosen to head a committee of scholarly bishops to create a true text English Bible fit for her reign as Queen of England. This 1568 “Bishops Bible” was needed to replace the fading Great Bible of Henry, though it never could compete with the Geneva Bible of 1560.
Matthew Parker was Elizabeth I choice for the position of Archbishop of Canterbury and served as such from 1559-1575. Parker had been the favorite chaplain of Elizabeth's mother, Anne Boleyn. Before Anne was arrested in 1536, she had entrusted Elizabeth's spiritual well being to Parker.
The Bishops' Bible was undertaken at Matthew Parker's request, prepared under his supervision, and published at his expense in 1572. Much of his time and labor from 1563 to 1568 was given to this work.

Because each sculpture is hand-finished rather than mass-produced, there will naturally be some color variation and no two will be exactly alike. This is part of the nature and beauty of handmade objects, and should not be considered a flaw or defect. If you are attempting to match your previous sculpture purchases or have a particular look in mind (more or fewer highlights, for example), please contact us and we will be happy to provide photos of our current inventory so you can select the exact sculpture that will be shipped to you.
